Anti-Tunnel Group Nets Another $5,600

By Erica C. Barnett March 28, 2011

Protect Seattle Now, the group that's pushing to kill three agreements between the city and state on the deep-bore tunnel, reported another $5,600 in contributions this past Friday, bringing their total to just under $40,000. (Because the group hasn't filed any expenditure reports yet, it's unclear how much money they've spent so far and how much they have on hand.) The group has until tomorrow
to come up with 16,500 valid signatures to get the referendum on the ballot.

Among the notable recent contributors:

• Seattle Transit Blogger Ben Schiendelman contributed $200, bringing his total to $500;

• Tim Harris, director of Real Change, gave $50;

• John Norquist, CEO of the Congress for the New Urbanism (and former mayor of Milwaukee, which tore down its own waterfront freeway in 2002), gave $100;

• Chris Rule of the Cascade Bicycle Club gave $50; and

• Sol Villareal, who does community outreach for Mayor Mike McGinn's office, gave $100;

The pro-tunnel campaign, which just registered with the city's elections office Monday, has not yet reported any contributions (and will not be required to do so until early April).

Meanwhile, the Seattle Times
' Lynn Thompson reports that some legal experts say the tunnel signatures aren't subject to referendum, because they're merely administrative actions to implement a previously adopted policy. In any case, a legal challenge is virtually inevitable if Seattle residents do vote "no" on the referendum (against the tunnel).

Thompson, who followed signature gatherers around for an evening, didn't get around to mentioning the person who signed the petition because "The Seattle Times editorial board are fucking idiots on this issue."
