Another Potential Council Contender

By Erica C. Barnett March 7, 2011

In addition to long-shot Sally Clark opponent Fathi Karshie, who just filed to run against the two-term incumbent today, there's another potential contender for city council this year: Local filmmaker Sandy Cioffi, who spent a week in a Nigerian military prison in 2008 while filming a documentary, Sweet Crude
, about political and economic conditions in the Niger Delta.

Contacted by phone this morning, Cioffi said, "Yes, the rumor that I'm thinking about [running] is true," adding that she plans to make a final decision within the month. "As an independent filmmaker, I've got a bit of a head start [on fundraising], because it's not like we don't go around asking people for money all the time," Cioffi says.

Cioffi says she wouldn't run against Sally Clark. "It's not because she's a lesbian and I'm a lesbian, but because ... from what I can tell, she's a person I would like to see keep her job" on the council, Cioffi says. That leaves Jean Godden (who, Cioffi notes, already has four opponents), Bruce Harrell, Tom Rasmussen, or Tim Burgess, none of whom have attracted much (or, in Rasmussen's case, any) competition so far.
