US News: Best Cities For Transit

By Erica C. Barnett February 9, 2011

US News ranks the top 10 cities for transit, based on investment in transit infrastructure, ridership, and safety.

No. 1? Portland.

Ouch.

Adding insult to injury, Seattle doesn't even rank on the list---we're tied with the D.C. Metro system at No. 11, largely because our transit system has more "safety incidents" (like collisions and fires) than other systems.

Then again, it's tough to know exactly what factors the analysis considered without seeing the data---the fact that Salt Lake City, for example, ranked No. 2 in part because it "serv[es] a large suburban and exurban population" makes me wonder whether Seattle might have ranked higher if serving a dense urban core was one of the criteria.
