Last Night
Last Night: The Ballard Market
Sorry, Whole Foods: The Ballard Market is the best grocery store in town.
Exhibit A: It's open 24 hours.
Exhibit B: The salad/prepared bar. Good god. Lasagna, hummus, tabbouli, every imaginable kind of olive, falafel... It's by far the best cold food bar in town.
Exhibit C: The bulk section! Every spice/legume/grain Whole Foods offers at a fraction of the price, plus an amazing-looking (full disclosure: I don't like sweets) array of candy.
Exhibit D: The seafood section, which is a marvel worthy of a supermarket just a mile or so north of Fisherman's Terminal.
Exhibit E: The cosmetic/medicine aisle, which features (in addition to plenty of very expensive organic shampoos, foot restoratives, herbal supplements, etc.) an array of Olde Tyme oddities, including a giant display of cod liver oil.
Case: Closed.
