Last Night
Last Night: GMK's Beautiful Bright Twisted Fantasy
Back in 2009, PubliCola's MusicNerd wrote a 3,000-word story on Seattle rapper GMK. MusicNerd (aka, Anand Balasubrahmanyan) seized on GMK's "Songs for Bloggers" mix tape as an eccentric and promising new release.
GMK left for Los Angeles shortly after a farewell September gig at the Showbox and has been coming off the bench as a guest on other people's projects as he's slowly made the scene in L.A. for the last year and a half.
This weekend, he posted a new mix where he's the star. It's called Dirt & Diamonds, 40 minutes of smart, goofy, and infectious rhymes that make Kanye West look like a spoiled brat.
GMK has the same addicting charisma that West has, but instead of pouring loads of money and piles of overdubs into some grandiose prefab Mozart/Led Zeppelin schtick (like West's much-hyped My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy), GMK relies on minimalist tracking, occasional knob twisting, and front-and-center flows to deliver a beautiful bright twisted fantasy.
