City Shakeup Eliminates Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Prevention Divisions

By Erica C. Barnett January 20, 2011

Today's shakeup at the city's Human Services Department will impact more than just individual city employees like former deputy HSD director Sara Levin, who is being "reaassigned" to the new position of Director of Fiscal and Contract Management.

According to a letter to employees from HSD director Dannette Smith, the changes---which "represent a significant shift for the department and set the course for supporting our strategic plan"---include eliminating the current Youth Development & Achievement, Early Learning & Family Support, and Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Prevention divisions of the department.

Those divisions' work will be subsumed under two new divisions, the Community Support & Self-Sufficiency Division and Youth & Family Empowerment Division.

It's unclear whether the reorganization represents a de-emphasis on domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, which will no longer have their own dedicated division at the human services department.

Neither Mayor Mike McGinn's spokesman Aaron Pickus nor Levin has returned calls for comment.
