Update: Librarians Decline Raises

By Erica C. Barnett December 15, 2010

As we reported in Fizz this morning, Seattle city librarian Susan Hildreth proposed giving raises and promotions to three assistant library directors---a move that was sure to be controversial given recent layoffs at the library and across the city. The raises would have cost the city $25,000. However, this morning, library spokeswoman Caroline Ullmann said the three librarians "have decided to accept the additional responsibilities but decline any increase in salary at this time. They said that while they expect compensation for the positions to be addressed sometime in the future, they believe the financial health of the organization is the higher priority at present."
