The Latest Numbers: Will Sanders Concede?

By Erica C. Barnett November 10, 2010

The latest election returns are in from around the state, and supreme court challenger Charlie Wiggins continues to increase his lead over incumbent Position 6 justice Richard Sanders, to a margin of more than 5,000 votes. Sanders has not yet conceded to Wiggins despite the fact that Wiggins has closed in, then increased his lead on, the incumbent in every vote count since the November 2 election.

In the other races we're tracking, only one---the 25th District state House race between Hans Zeiger and Dawn Morrell---appears to be headed for a recount. Democratic incumbent Morrell, as of last night, is beating Republican challenger Zeiger by just 61 votes, with today's numbers still outstanding.

Secretary of State Sam Reed's spokesman David Ammons says an automatic recount isn't triggered in legislative races until the margin shrinks to about 150 votes. In the other races we mentioned remained close this morning, the margin isn't nearly that small. In the 41st District Senate race between Democratic incumbent Randy Gordon and Republican challenger Steve Litzow, Litzow leads by 336 votes; in the 30th District state House race, Republican Katrina Asay leads Democrat Carol Gregory by 418 votes. Numbers for today aren't in yet in the 42nd District House race, where Republican challenger Vincent Buys leads Democratic  incumbent Kelli Linville by 311 votes. None of those races are currently "within the recount margin," Ammons says.
