Mayor McGinn, Georgetown Has Some Questions for You

By Erica C. Barnett November 16, 2010

Georgetown residents met for two hours last night to discuss Mayor Mike McGinn's proposal to site a semi-permanent homeless encampment on a piece of industrial land in SoDo. Deputy Mayor Darryl Smith has said the mayor's office did not feel it was necessary to reach out specifically to Georgetown and Beacon Hill, the two residential neighborhoods closest to the site, because the site itself is in SoDo, and residents of both neighborhoods say the mayor's office did not contact them before announcing his preferred location last week. Yesterday, the mayor announced he was holding a meeting on Thursday for the general public to discuss his proposal, but he has not set up meetings specifically to address Beacon Hill or Georgetown residents' concerns.

Georgetown Community Council president Holly Krejcl says members raised a number of questions at last night's meeting. Among them:

• What's the city's goal in establishing a permanent tent city? "Is it to get people into transitional housing, or is it to provide a place where people can live in tents?" Krejcl says.

• What's the growth strategy for the encampment? Will it get larger over time?

• Who's going to run the site?

• What rules is the city going to impose on the people who live in the encampment?

• How will the city evaluate whether the encampment is successful?

• Is there sufficient bus access to get people to and from work, stores, and services?

• Will families be living in the encampment, or just adults?

Thursday's meeting is at the Showbox SODO, 1700 First Ave. S. The proposal will also be discussed at tomorrow night's meeting of the Greater Duwamish District Council.
