Today's winner is Washington State

The U.S. Senate failed to pass a ban on earmarks today. Why is this a win for Washington State? Because U.S. Sen. Patty Murray is one of the top ten legislators when it comes to getting Washington State projects—everything from big defense programs to crime fighting grants to transportation dollars—into the federal budget.

In 2010, Murray won $219 million worth.

Today's Loser is Washington State

Former State Sen. Jeanette Hayner died on Friday.

Hayner's tenure as the first female majority leader of the state senate was well before PubliCola's time (the 1980s), so we'll defer to Joel Connelly who files an obituary over at the PI.com.
