Afternoon Jolt

By Afternoon Jolt November 17, 2010

Today's winner is Gov. Chris Gregoire

Gov. Gregoire was named chair of the National Governor's Association today. This may seem like a spectacular feat given that Republicans now control 29 of the 50 governor's mansions, but bear in mind, NGA rules require the new chair to come from the same party as the resigning chair. (W. Virginia's Democratic Governor Joe Manchin, the new senator from W. Virginia, resigned. The Democrats were up 26-22 before Nov. 2.)

That's not to diminish D gov Gregoire's new position, nor her Afternoon Jolt award. Congrats to Gregoire, who's clearly taking her leadership of a Republican-dominated organization very seriously—issuing an executive order today to limit the ability of government agencies to do their jobs.

Today's loser is Sarah Palin

The drop-out governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, is an official loser today. Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski formally won the senate race, knocking out Palin-endorsed Tea Party candidate Joe Miller with an unprecedented write-in campaign after losing to Miller in the GOP primary.
