Last Night: Hobnobbing With Seattle's Green Power Elite
On Friday night, I hit the fundraiser for Worldchanging that I previewed the other day.
'Twas a pleasant fall evening for a bike ride, and on the way I passed the scene shown below, where the City has just broken ground on the new streetcar plaza at McGraw Square Park. That block of Westlake Ave is now closed to cars forever. Cool. I say let's take back more of Westlake Ave, one triangular block at a time.
Almost there, I learned that in case I'm ever in the market for $100k electric exoticar to ease my green guilt, there's now a Tesla dealer on Westlake Ave. Check out the hot stuff:
And now to the hobnobbing. Portland Mayor Sam Adams is about the most likable mayor I've ever seen speak. But Mayor Mike McGinn had the most memorable (to me) line. If I can paraphrase: "Those of us who have been concerned with environmental issues for a long time thought that with global warming we'd finally get some traction, because you know, we're talking about saving the entire planet, literally. But no..."
Stalling the inevitable end was fun, but it was time to go, and, given that there was free wine and beer at the event, my friend and I decided it might be a good idea to walk our bikes for a bit, and walk we did, all the way up to Pike/Pine, where we couldn't resist slipping in to Vermillion for a nightcap:
