Conlin: Supermajority of Council Supports Me on Tunnel Decision

By Erica C. Barnett September 24, 2010

Small side note to the ongoing tunnel EIS saga: During this afternoon's impromptu press conference, I asked city council president Richard Conlin whether he'd polled his council colleagues on his decision to sign a draft environmental impact statement for the tunnel over Mayor Mike McGinn's objections.

(For those just tuning in: McGinn says Conlin's move violated the city charter and state law and effectively ended the city's role as a co-lead on the viaduct replacement project; Conlin says the city attorney's office told him the move was kosher; the cityattorney says they'll have to do more analysis to find out who's right).

In response to my question, Conlin confirmed that he had consulted "most of my colleagues, and they're all supportive" of his decision to sign the document. How many colleagues had he reached? "Six," Conlin said---a supermajority of the council.
