Afternoon Jolt: Today's Winners and Losers

By Afternoon Jolt September 16, 2010

Today's Winner: State Sen. Rodney Tom (D-48, Eastisde Seattle Suburbs)

On review, we're reversing our call from yesterday when we made Tom's Republican challenger, Gregg Bennett, the day's winner.

A quick recap: The Democrats sent out a hit on Bennett yesterday saying he was "lying" on his voters' guide statement and on the campaign trail by saying he was a CPA. Bennett responded by providing his CPA license number, which seemed to check out.

On further review, Meranda Scott, an investigative administrator at the Washington State Board of Accountancy says Bennett had a "certificate, not a license." A certificate means a person has passed CPA exams, but it does not mean they are licensed to practice public accounting.

Bennett acknowledged to us today that "I could not practice public accounting."

Today's Loser: 3rd Congressional District candidate Denny Heck

While the Democrats have been breathless about the latest U.S. Sen. Patty Murray polls (there's yet another one today—the third in a row—that has her ahead), they're sounding pretty desperate about Heck, who's running for U.S. Rep. Brian Baird's open seat against Republican Jaime Herrera.

Their spin on the latest poll that has Herrera up 52-43? It's trending Heck's way because she used to be up 54-41.
