Jolt
Afternoon Jolt: Economic Future
Losers: Citizens for Our Economic Future
This week, a district judge in Tacoma ruled that a state-imposed limit on contributions to initiative campaigns violated free speech laws. (Good coverage in the Washington State Wire.)
That means the forces against I-1107, the initiative to repeal the state's new taxes on candy and pop, are even more screwed than before. The group of social liberals, called Citizens for Our Economic Future, are already getting beaten savagely by the I-1107 campaign, which is funded by the American Beverage Association (ie, the soda pop lobby). Citizens for Our Economic Future has raised $330,000 to the soda lobby's $14 million (and, apparently, counting).
Winner: Rob McKenna
The ruling on campaign contributions, however, is being appealed by Attorney General Rob McKenna—once again putting the AG on the good side of the liberal crowd (he scored earlier points with social liberals by siding with R71 supporters in a lawsuit to keep the names of initiative signers public).
It's widely speculated that McKenna, a moderate Republican, will run for governor in 2012.
