Morning Fizz
A Major Media Buy in Western Washington
1. Morning stat: Washington currently ranks 4th in the nation in the number of high-tech companies, but 46th in the number of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) college graduates.
According to a September 10 letter that the Excellent Schools Coalition sent to Edie Harding, Executive Director of the the State Board of Education, about tomorrow's ed board meeting (where the board will be taking up high school graduation requirements ), the state needs to add another year of science to high school requirements.
Currently, students only need two years of science to graduate.
2. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has reportedly made a major media buy in Western Washington, according to the National Journal . An estimated $1.6 million is supposedly going to support U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen (D-2, NW Washington) who is facing a serious threat from Tea Party favorite John Koster.
The report also noted that, given the alarm over Koster's momentum in the 2nd, the DCCC may focus its spend there and leave out Democratic challenger Suzan DelBene, who's taking on Republican U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert in the Seattle suburbs, the 8th Congressional District.
3. The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) sent out a press release yesterday listing Democratic senators who were bailing out on President Obama's plan to end former President Bush's tax cuts for rich people (those making over $250,000)
On their list: Joe Lieberman (D-I), Jim Webb (D-VA), Kent Conrad (D-ND), Evan Bayh (D-IN), and Ben Nelson (D-NE).
Fizz called Sen. Patty Murray to see if her position to let the upper bracket cuts expire had changed. Nope. And that's hardly a surprise. The Democratic senator that Murray least often votes with? Ben Nelson (D-NE).
4. Erica C. Barnett is out of town this week, so the Fizz is not as dialed in to the City Hall gossip as usual, but we did hear this titillating rumor: Things are so testy between certain council members and Mayor Mike McGinn that certain council staffers are not allowed up on the 7th floor. We'll do our best to get more on that one.
