Prosecutors Charge Man With Hate Crime In West Seattle Bar Assault

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee August 13, 2010

King County prosecutors have filed assault and malicious harassment charges—Washington's hate crime statute—against a 27-year-old man for an allegedly racially-motivated attack outside a West Seattle bar.

According to court documents, bar staff at the Bamboo Bar and Grill in the 62nd Ave SW and Alki Ave SW cut off Temoteo Tauno Penor around 12:20am on July 12th. He then left the bar and joined a group of friends outside on the street.

A security guard outside the bar saw Penor "play fighting" with friends before he walked up to another man, who was smoking a cigarette and talking on his cell phone.

The victim later told police Penor approached him and said "What are you looking at, nigger?" Court records indicate Penor is Hispanic/Asian and the victim is African American.

Penor then "swung a deliberate right hook" at the victim, hitting him in the head and apparently knocking him unconscious, sending the man face first into the curb.

Penor fled the scene, but a club security guard followed and detained Penor, until 5 or 6 of Penor's friends showed up, surrounded the bouncer, and told him to let Penor go.

The victim sustained a broken nose, broken jaw, and three broken teeth in the attack. Court records show the damage done to the man's jaw in the assault.

Court documents say Penor has previous cases for disorderly conduct, assault, and minor in possession of alcohol. Records say Penor has been ordered by the Bellevue Municipal Court to enroll in anger management classes, although it appears he has not done so.

The King County Jail register indicates police have not yet arrested Penor.
