Man Shot By Police Was Wanted For Attacking His Mother

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee August 17, 2010

Police sources tell us the man fatally shot by Seattle police in a Wedgwood grocery store last night was wanted for allegedly attacking his mother at their shared North Seattle home one day earlier.

On August 15th, police received a report that the man had argued with his mother at their home, and choked her until she lost consciousness. The man fled the home, and police were unable to locate him that evening.

The 43-year-old man's mother had apparently filed a restraining order against him, but he was still living with her, sources say.

According to jail records, the man has been booked into the King County Jail at least 15 times since 1985, and has a long criminal record, which includes charges for domestic violence assault, harassment, attempting to elude police, weapons, drugs, and obstruction.

One source tells Seattlecrime.com that the man frequently fought with or fled from police during a number of his previous arrests. A Seattle police spokesman says the 43-year-old man pulled a gun on officers when he was contacted at the QFC where he worked last night.

Seattle Times and several other news outlets reported the man was shot in the back by police. However, police have told us that the man was was actually shot in the abdomen.

We're waiting on final word from the medical examiner's office.

SPD is scheduling a press conference to discuss the incident later today.
