Tebelius Outpaces Hunter in Eastside Fundraising Battle
PubliCola has been following the Eastside Races this year as Republicans attempt to re-conquer their old stronghold in the Seattle 'burbs.
In the 48th Legislative District, Republican Diane Tebelius is taking on incumbent Democrat Ross Hunter—a race we last covered on June 25th with a PubliColaTV match-up. At that point, Hunter was ahead of Tebelius in both money raised and cash on hand. Today, we learned that Tebelius has pulled ahead in the fundraising battle. The Public Disclosure Commission has Ross Hunter with $43,094, and Republican Tebelius raising $50,835.
It's even more staggering when you dig a little deeper. Hunter has been accepting contributions since October of last year, whereas Tebelius only started this May. And get this: Tebelius is really outpacing Hunter recently. Since our last check-in on June 25th, Tebelius has raised $20,070. Hunter? A mere $7,249.
A lot of Tebelius' contributions (nearly $8,800) came in on June 29th-30th, so I assumed that there was some sort of fundraising drive—an online blitz, a big dinner, or something to bring in the bucks. I called Tebelius' camp to check my theory. I was wrong.
They haven't done any fundraisers. According to Tebelius' campaign manager Jasmine Wolfe, they "sent out a mailer to Diane's contacts" a little while ago. That's it. (Among Tebelius' contributors is $800 from eastside developer Kemper Freeman.)
And while Hunter has spent less than Tebelius (he still leads by around $4,000 in cash on hand), it's game on between the two poster-children of their respective parties. (Hunter is the Democratic Finance Chair for the State House, and Tebelius is a former Chair of the Washington State Republican Party.)
Over the phone, Hunter dismissed the numbers. "Fundraising comes and goes, especially over the fourth of July holiday."
And he said it's going to be an even fight. "I expect to spend a couple hundred thousand on this campaign, and I expect her to have a reasonably funded campaign as well."
