Schene Will Not Be Tried Again for Jail Cell Beating of 15-Year-Old

After a second jury deadlocked, Paul Schene will not be tried for a third time for the November 2008 alleged assault of a 15-year-old in a jail cell that was captured on video.

From the King County Prosecutor's Office:

The King County Prosecutor's Office announced today that it will not pursue a third trial for former King County Sheriff's Deputy Paul Schene, who was charged with fourth degree assault for allegedly assaulting 15-year-old Malika Calhoun in a holding cell at a Sheriff's Office precinct in November 2008.

Schene's first two trials ended in hung juries. In January, a jury was deadlocked 11 to 1 to convict, and last Thursday the jury was split 11 to 1 to acquit. Given that two juries were unable to reach a unanimous verdict, which requires proof beyond a reasonable doubt, prosecutors believe that a third trial is unwarranted.
