A 28-year-old Seattle man has been charged with identity theft after police say he took money from a developmentally disabled man with significant learning difficulties he'd befriended in the Westlake neighborhood.

Investigators say George Joseph Matousek gave the man a fake name and claimed he was some type of financial businessman. He allegedly convinced the man to open a Bank of America account, which he did at 500 Olive Way. He was given checks, an ATM card and information about his new account, authorities say.

"Matousek told (the man) … he would put money into the account, (the man) would take it out in cash and they would split it," Detective Keith Savas wrote in charging documents. "(The man) told the Officer and Detective he did not understand what Matousek was asking of him but liked him so did as he was told."

Matousek's arraignment scheduled for July 14. Dan Donohoe, a spokesman for the King County Prosecutor, did not have his attorney's name and said it appeared the office had not been contacted by one Tuesday afternoon.

Police said he went to Walgreen's and purchased a pre-paid phone for the disabled man to connect for further transactions. On June 25, the man allegedly met Matousek at a Bank of America where the man withdrew $999, of which Matousek kept $649, according to court documents.
