Man Claims Car Prowler Shot At Him
Seattle police are investigating a man's claim that a car prowler opened fire on him after a short chase in the East Precinct last week.
At about 5:00am on July 2nd, the victim—who was staying with a friend in the 600 block of Eastlake Ave—woke up to the sound of breaking glass out on the street.
The victim saw the suspect standing next to the broken window of his Audi, before he ran and climbed into to the passenger seat of a light green compact car, which sped off.
The victim ran to his car and drove after the suspect, following him through the East Precinct until the suspect pulled over. The victim then "stopped his vehicle perpendicular to the compact," the report says.
The victim told police that the suspect then jumped out of the car and fired one or two shots at him. The suspect then got back in his car and—which was driven by a woman and also occupied by another man in the back seat—and fled.
Now, before you get all panicky about violent car prowlers, there are some weird details in this report, and my gut instinct is that it didn't quite happen the way the victim told the officer it happened.
First: when officers contacted the victim at 10th Ave and E Garfield St, he told police it took him awhile to contact officers because he did not have a working cell phone. Except, as it turns out, the man had four "non-functioning" cell phones in his car, and ended up calling police on one of them. Significance? Maybe nothing. But most people don't have four cell phones.
The strangest detail? When police talked to the victim, he told officers the suspect shot at the left side of his car. In fact, police found damage to the back right side of his Audi.
Is it possible the victim gave police some mixed-up, adrenaline-addled details? Definitely. But it's clear from the report that things didn't happen quite the way the victim told police they did.
