Drive-By Shooting Near Central District Park

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee July 16, 2010

One man was detained by police following a drive-by shooting near Powell Barnett Park in the Central District earlier this week.

Police received reports of gunfire near 27th and Jefferson around 9:30pm, and one woman later called and said someone had tried to shoot at her.

Officers met the woman, who told police she had been standing outside a car with several friends at  27th and Jefferson when another car passed by, and someone sitting in the passenger seat fired "several rounds" at the victims.

The gunfire shattered one of the car windows, scratching one young woman. Police say no one else was injured.

The victims weren't able to give police much information about the gunman, but another witness told officers the shooter was riding in a blue SUV.

It appears police got the name of a young man somehow connected to the shooting—the confusing police report isn't clear on the man's role in the incident—and tried calling him on his cell phone.  According to the report, the man "was very argumentative" and called one officer a "fuckin pig" before he hung up the phone.

Following the incident, officers were driving through the neighborhood and noticed a group of people standing around a blue SUV at Martin Luther King Jr Way S and E Jefferson St.

Officers got out of their car and again dialed the cell phone of the man who had refused to speak with officers earlier in the evening. "As we exited our patrol vehicle, [we] again tried calling cell phone, which could be heard ringing on one of the subjects," the report says.

Police contacted the man, who continued his streak of being uncooperative, although he admitted to officers he had "taken several shots" at a car that night.

"When asked where the vehicle was that had been shot at," the report says, "he would not say where the vehicle was, but said it was "around"

Police detained and handcuffed the man, but it's not clear whether he was booked for any crime. We'll follow up with police later today.
