The Real Tea Party Candidate
With the filing deadline officially over, here's a list of all the candidates on this year's ballot.
Even though everyone is talking about Clint Didier as the Tea Party challenger to Dino Rossi, Didier actually filed as "Prefers Republican Party."
(In our top-two primary system, candidates can't list just "Republican" or "Democrat"---or "Tea Party," for that matter---because the state is not allowed to identify a candidate as the official nominee of a political party. Instead, candidates must say they "prefer" a party---a situation that allows candidates to simply invent their own parties.)
The only candidate who is officially running as a Tea Party candidate ("Prefers Tea Party") is Rex A. Brocki, from Union Gap, who's running in the primary for incumbent U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings' (R-WA, 4, South Central Washington) seat.
Other new "parties":
In Seattle's 36th state Legislative District, Leslie Klein is running on the "Prefers Problemfixer Party" against Democratic incumbent state Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles.
In the 40th state Legislative District (San Juan, Skagit, and Whatcom) Doug Yoshe Revelle, from Bellingham, is running on the "Prefers Happiness Party."
And in the 19th state Legislative District (Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, Pacific, and Wahkiakum) Tim Sutinen is running on the "Prefers Lower Taxes Party" against Democratic incumbent Rep. Brian Blake.
