PubliCola Adds Life

Last Night

Last night I had some time to kill in Lake City, and how could I resist this:

Awesome Lynchian cast of characters inside, and Budweiser is like comfort food to me. But hey, guess what? They also serve Stella ("Stella! Fuck that shit!" ...R.I.P. Dennis Hopper)

Then it was over to Dick's for post-gymnastics chocolate shakes with my daughter and her best friend, where this was the scene in the parking lot:

Yep, those boys love their Z-cars. Conveniently, they don't have to go far for new tires:

This is the north end of the part of Lake City Way that was given a streetscape facelift not too long ago---note the fancy colored paving on the sidewalk. Not quite what city planners usually have in mind when they pine for retail uses that spill out onto the sidewalk.

Here in Lake City, as in so much of America, the transition from car-dependence is going to take a long time. As you can see in the background of the photo, walkable urbanism has established a preliminary foothold. But there's an almost unconceivably vast pile of car-oriented stuff already on the ground that must be fixed/retrofitted/nuked/rebuilt to suit human beings who wish to enjoy life outside of a metal box.

For now, like the country as a whole, Lake City remains a fascinating, dysfunctional, beautiful, heartbreaking mix of everything.
