Is Taser Powering Up Its Board With Local Tech Talent to Win Cop Cam Deal?

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee June 30, 2010

Two weeks ago, staff in city council member Bruce Harrell's office contacted Arizona-based Taser International about possibly bringing their cop cam technology to Seattle.

While it makes sense that the city would reach out to a major producer of law enforcement tech like Taser, it would appear that a City Council approved a boycott of Arizona—in response to the state's recent implementation of draconian immigration policies—would prevent the city from purchasing any of Arizona-based Taser's cop cams.

But last week, Taser added big name local tech executive Hadi Partovi—who's worked with Microsoft, Facebook, and Myspace—to their board, perhaps in anticipation of the uphill battle they'll have to fight to seal this deal with SPD.

Staff in Harrell's office says Taser is still eligible to apply as a supplier for Seattle's cop cams—assuming the police department can find the money for them and the city can strike a deal with the union—but it remains to be seen whether the council's Arizona boycott could have an effect on any deal.

Taser says they brought Partovi on board to "provide added experience as well as a strategic focus to roll out our emerging innovative Evidence.com and Protector driver and mobile technology." But It sure looks like Taser—which already supplies SPD with their, um, Tasers—is counting on the ban sticking, and are already bringing in executives familiar with the players in the region to push their product.

We'll see.
