Did You Hear the Cop Chopper Near Columbia City Last Night?

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee June 9, 2010

We love it when people email us tips!

Seattlecrime reader Karen sent us this email earlier today asking about police activity near MLK and Alaska St last night:

There were a bunch of cops in our neighborhood, they were searching for someone, and there was a helicopter searching as well.

I looked on the news sites and police blotter and I haven't seen anything about this incident.  It went on for a good 1/2 hour about 1 am last night.

Karen, we have an answer:

Seattle police tell us officers were chasing a stolen vehicle in South Seattle last night.

SPD spokesman Mark Jamieson says a car was taken near Swift and Beacon Ave S around 1:00am. When police tried to pull the car over, the driver sped off.

Officers deployed spike strips near MLK and Alaska to stop the vehicle, but three suspects bailed out of the car and ran.

Police took two suspects in to custody, and called in the Guardian One helicopter to search for a third suspect.

Jamieson says police are still looking for asian male between 15 and 19 years old.
