A man did not want a panhandler hanging around in Madison Park, so he beat him up and yelled at him to leave.

Many witnesses told police the June 25 attack was unprovoked, according to the police report. The victim was standing at 41st Ave E and E Madison St around 1 p.m., holding a sign and asking for money. All witnesses told police that the suspect walked up to the victim and started yelling at him for intimidating people and telling him to stop begging for money. The suspect then began hitting the man with his knee and knocked him to the ground at least twice. While the victim was on the ground, the suspect started kicking the victim's bag, all while yelling at him to go away. The suspect then walked away.

When police stopped the suspect, he claimed he had only yelled at the man. He then said he was angry at the victim for intimidating elderly people and said the victim did not belong in the area. Nobody in the area had complained of aggressive panhandling.

The suspect was arrested.
