Middle School Students Suspended For Attempting to Shoot Classmates With Airsoft Gun
Three Washington Middle School students were booted from school last month after they shot at several schoolmates with an airsoft gun—which school officials did not report to police.
A police report says Officer Erin Rodriguez—who is assigned to WMS—spotted an 8th grade boy riding his bike near the school on April 23rd during school hours. When Officer Rodriquez asked the boy why he wasn't in school, he told the officer he had been suspended for 15 days for playing with a BB gun at school.
Officer Rodriguez contacted an assistant principal at Washington Middle School, who confirmed that the boy and at least one 6th grader had been expelled for bringing a "toy gun" to school. According to the report, the assistant principal told the officer the incident was not reported because "it was a clear, plastic gun and not used with malice."
However, another student later told Officer Rodriguez that the boys actually been caught with a black airsoft gun. The report says the boys had colored the gun's orange tip black, and it apparently looked real enough. The student also told Officer Rodriguez the boys had pointed the gun at her and she "was scared because [she] didn't know if it was real."
The report indicates one of the boys shot also shot one student in the elbow.
After speaking with witnesses, Officer Rodriguez again confronted school staff about why the incident hadn't been reported. A WMS employee, who apparently dismissed the seriousness of the incident, told Rodriguez "it was a toy gun, with orange on the end. The kind you get at a .99 cent store. We verified it was plastic."
We'll check in with the school district later today and see if we can find out why the incident wasn't reported to police.
