Female Officer Involved In SPD Stomping Case Previously Investigated For Brutality

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee May 13, 2010

Officer Mary Lynn Woollum, one of two SPD officers captured on tape stomping on an (innocent) robbery suspect last month, has previously been accused of brutality.

From the PI.com:

On July 31, 2003, Woollum was working with an anti-crime team that included Sgt. Joseph Bauer and Officers Christopher Garrett and Zsolt Dornay Jr. They were riding in an unmarked black Ford Explorer and patrolling an area near Regrade Park in Seattle. Woollum was in the front passenger seat.

Details from her January 2007 court declaration give the details of that night.

Just after midnight, she noticed people standing outside Kelly's, a bar with a history of violence. She reported hearing [Raymond] Nix say, "No, I want two for 20," which she recognized as common language for a suspected cocaine deal. The cops stopped the car and contacted Nix and the woman.

Woollum said she saw Nix with a $20 bill in his hand near the woman. She held what Woollum thought was crack rocks.

An investigator working for attorney Paul Richmond, who represented Nix in the unsuccessful lawsuit, interviewed witnesses from a park across the street who said Nix was pummeled long after he lost consciousness. Nix said in court documents he was paraded in front of others at the jail by one of the officers who said, "this is what happens when you mess with the sergeant in charge of narcotics."
