Was Fatal South Seattle Shooting Self-Defense?

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee April 6, 2010

The fatal shooting of a 24-year-old man South Seattle late last month may been a case of self-defense.

Yesterday afternoon, Seattle police arrested 23-year-old Isiah Harris-Nelson at a home in Beacon Hill for the murder of Andrew Ray Johnson, who was gunned down in the 4600 block of S Brandon St on March 28th.

Harris-Nelson is being held in the King County Jail awaiting possible charges, but police documents indicate the shooting may have been in self-defense.

Police records say Harris-Nelson was sitting in a car parked in the 4600 block of S Brandon, with two women and another man, when Johnson walked up to the car and tried to grab the driver through a car window.

The driver sped off, but later circled back to drop off the two women in the car.

Police records say Johnson "suddenly emerged from the shadows and ran toward the passenger side [of the car] grabbing at Harris-Nelson who fired three shots at Johnson."

When police arrested Harris-Nelson yesterday afternoon, and police records say he admitted to shooting Johnson.

Johnson was Tasered and arrested by police last February after he went on a rampage in South Seattle, hacking at street signs with a machete. Johnson was also previously admitted to a mental health facility.

The records we've received from the court thus far seem to indicate that Nelson-Harris and Johnson didn't know each other. We'll be following this case to see if prosecutors end up charging Harris-Nelson. We'll update when we've got more info.
