There Can Be Only One!

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee April 28, 2010

A few weeks ago, we told you about potential problems for Seattle police chief candidate (and current Spokane chief) Anne Kirkpatrick, who recently ended up on the business end of a no-confidence vote, issued by her department's police union.

Now, the Seattle Weekly has posted that another chief candidate, former Miami deputy chief Adam Burden, has some burdensome (!!!) problems of his own:

In 2002, Felicia Brown accused Burden, then just a Major, of feeling her up multiple times and making unwanted sexual advances. Brown also alleged that after filing a complaint with the department, she was forced to work solo late-night shifts in one of the more dangerous areas of Miami. Her attorney, Charles Baron, says the suit was eventually settled, but a confidentiality agreement prevents him from disclosing the sum.

The next year saw Miami play host to the Free Trade Area of the Americas protests. According to court documents, around 2500 Miami police officers in full riot gear opened up a can of Norm Stamper-brand whup-ass on the estimated 12,000 protesters gathered in downtown Miami. Police used bean-bag guns, rubber-bullets, pepper spray, and metal batons to "herd" protesters out of the area, said the plaintiffs.

By 2009 by both [Miami police chief John] Timoney and Burden were out of jobs, the latter choosing retirement over demotion after the new Mayor, Tomas Regalado, replaced his boss.

Kirkpatrick may have less to worry about as the Spokane union's no-confidence vote has since been called into question, but claims of sexual harassment and a record of beating up protesters could be a bit tougher for Burden to shake.

The 26-member police chief search committee is expected to narrow down the current list of 11 candidates and provide Mayor Mike McGinn with the names of 3 top picks in June.
