The Morning Blotter: Columbia City Purse Snatcher Gets Away Despite Dogged Pursuit
An SPD K9 unit tracked a suspected purse snatcher all over Columbia City last week. Although police had a likely suspect, they weren't able to make an arrest.
A police report says a woman was was walking north on Martin Luther King Jr Wy S towards the Columbia City light rail station at about 8:30pm on March 28th when a man approached her from behind, grabbed her purse, and took off running towards Columbia City.
Police stopped a possible suspect who matched the man's description— a black male 35-40 years old with with long braided hair, wearing a dark coat; dark pants with a medium build around 5'10''—near Angie's Tavern in Columbia City, and called in K9 units to try to follow the suspect's trail from the crime scene.
The dog picked up the trail, which led to a nearby home. The report indicates the man officers stopped at Angie's just so happens to live in said home. The dog then continued on from the home, and headed straight to Angie's.
Although the K9 track appears to have connected the man directly with the crime scene, when police asked the woman to identify the suspect, she told officers "she was not totally sure that [the man in the bar] was the suspect." The report says officers had to let the man go.
