The Morning Blotter: 14-Year-Old Gang Member Suspected In Seattle-Area Robberies Charged

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee April 13, 2010

A teenage member of the Barrio Loco Humilde—a set of the Surenos gang—suspected in a string of armed robberies in South Seattle is facing charges after he was caught trying to knock over a gas station in Burien last week.

According to court documents, King County Sheriff's office detectives were sitting outside of a gas station at SW 114th St and 1st Ave SW in Burien when they saw two young men pull on hoods and blue bandannas and walk inside the store.

Court records say the teens—at least one of whom was wearing a blue bandanna "used as a symbol of membership with the Sureno criminal street gang"—pulled a green .45 caliber semi-auto Hi-Point handgun at the clerk, rifled through the cash register, and stole cigars and lotto tickets from behind the counter.

When the teens left the store, police were waiting. Officers chased down the 14-year-old, but the other boy was able to escape from police.

Police recovered the handgun—which, court records note, had its serial numbers removed—and a backpack filled with stolen items.

Police took the 14-year-old in to custody, and realized he looked strikingly similar to a suspect in two other similar armed robberies in West Seattle.

Court records say police beleive the teen was also involved in at least two other robberies in the 2800 block of SW Roxbury and 3800 block of California Ave SW earlier this month, and was captured on surveillance cameras carrying a similar gun, and wearing the same shoes and similar clothing worn in the Burien robbery.

So far, the 14-year-old has only been charged in connection with the Burien robbery.
