Red Light Camera Equipment Stolen In South Seattle

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee April 27, 2010

Bad news for red light camera haters:

A week after a thief made off with red light camera equipment from a South Seattle intersection, police  have recovered the pilfered the stolen goods—at least some of them—from a stolen vehicle left parked on Capitol Hill.

According to police documents, an officer on patrol on Capitol Hill on came across a silver Chevy Metro, parked and sticking out into traffic on Harvard Ave and E Pine St at about 4:00am on April 12th.

Records indicate the vehicle was damaged—with scratches and dents all over the side panels—and wiring had been pulled out of the vehicle's ignitions system.

The officer notified the dispatcher about the obviously stolen vehicle, and police began to poke around the car.

Records say police spotted a "city of Seattle street sign laying in the rear seat of the vehicle"—which was apparently related to a red light camera in the 4000 block of Martin Luther King Jr Way S—and another officer on scene mentioned that red light camera equipment had recently been stolen from the intersection.

Police were unable to contact the owner of the vehicle, so the car was towed to the SPD processing room until police could get a warrant to search the car.

SPD search warrant records indicate police recovered the sign from the car, but it's not clear whether other camera equipment is still missing. SPD hasn't yet been able to provide more details about what was taken from the intersection.
