Police Say Gang Member Tried to Pull Gun On Officers In West Seattle Last Week

Police say a 38-year-old member of the East Union Street Hustlers gang facing weapons and drug possession charges may have tried to pull a gun on officers when he was arrested in West Seattle last week.

Police records say gang detectives on patrol in the 6500 block of Delridge Way SW on March 25th spotted Mario Keith Brooks standing near a car parked on the street, with what appeared to be a shotgun or rifle slung over is shoulder, hidden under his coat.

According to a statement written by detective Josh Rurey, Brooks got in the car in a "rigid manner" as if carrying a weapon.

Detectives turned around and followed the car, and noticed that Brooks looked as if he was "concealing or retrieving something from under the seat."

Detectives pulled the car over asked Brooks whether he had a weapon. Court records say Brooks told detectives "Oh, no, I didn't have a gun," and "then immediately asked if [detectives] wanted to see his license, which he began to reach for" in his coat pocket.

Brooks kept reaching for his coat pocket, so detectives pulled him out of the car.

Police records say Det. Rurey told Brooks "if he had 'dope' on him that I wasn't worried about it," but as police began to pat Brooks down, he took off running.

Det. Rurey chased Brooks and tackled him. Police searched Brooks and found 4.2 grams of crack cocaine, 21.1 grams of powder cocaine, and 8.7 grams of marijuana, as well as a Colt Mark IV Mustang 380 Auto Plus II handgun, reported stolen in Eugene, OR last year. "I noticed the hammer was cocked and [it] appeared the safety was off," Det. Rurey wrote in his report. "There was a live hollow point round in the chamber."

According to court documents, police seem to think Brooks would've fired on officers during the incident if he had been given the chance. "Brooks appeared disappointed when I told him I did not want to see his ID or let him retrieve it," Det. Rurey wrote. "There is no doubt in my mind that Brooks' repeated attempts to...reach into his right pocket...was to pull a gun on me. Granting permission to retrieve the license...was a perfect time and opportunity for him to assault/shoot me."

Brooks was booked into the King County Jail.

Detectives never did find a rifle in the car, but they did find pepper spray, a knife, and a walking cane which believe may have been what they mistook for a rifle.

36 arrests and 24 convictions, including nine drug convictions, one for unlawful possession of a firearm, and one assault conviction as well as several arrests for weapons and obstruction.

Brooks remains in custody.
