Police Say Violent West Seattle Attack Was Random

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee April 27, 2010

Police documents say the 22-year-old man arrested for a senseless, brutal attack on a 40-year-old woman as she walked her nine-year-old daughter to daycare in West Seattle last week did not know his victim.

Police records say the woman was walking with her daughter about 3:30pm on April 23rd when the 22-year-old man approached the woman from behind at Lanham Pl SW and SW Graham St, grabbed her by her hair, and pulled her to the ground. Records say the attack was "unprovoked by anything."

Police say the man "began to beat her with his fists and stomp on her with his feet" before he allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the woman 15 times in her body and head.

A witness tried to intervene and stop the man, who then fled.

Witnesses followed the suspect, and directed police to a home in the 6300 block of 29th Ave SW.

Officers surrounded the house and took the man in to custody. The victim was transported to Harborview with life-threatening injuries. Her nine-year-old daughter was not injured.

Prosecutors have not yet charged the 22-year-old man, who is being held in the King County Jail on $1,000,000 bail. Prosecutors have until tomorrow to file charges.
