Last Night

By Camden Swita April 20, 2010

Last night’s lineup at Comet Tavern was supposed to be Psychedelic Horseshit, Eat Skull, Wet Paint, and Eel-Eater. (You should have seen Josh, Erica and Cynara nearly spit on their own chins guffawing at the band names when I got in this morning.)

Wet Paint, a rising Seattle noise trio that usually trolls the DIY scene, but has recently played in-studio at KEXP, had to cancel due to illness. That wasn’t so bad, as they were replaced by a local duo from the Central District, Haunted Horses (think of L.A./New York band Liars but with hints of math rock in the drum sequences), who I’ve seen once before at the secret-esque Healthy Times Fun Club and quite like.

They were followed by Eel-Eater, a trio also hailing from the CD. At their core they’re some kind of Riot- Grrl-Band-bass-guitar-and-drum outfit. But coupled with the female lead singer’s anxious-angry vocals, suddenly you’ve got touches of Sonic Youth. [Editor's note, old guffawing-spit-on-my-chin me was listening to Sonic Youth's 1983 song, "Make the Nature Scene," just this morning.]

This  lineup really should have been placed on a better night. Three of the four bands are local, and all are talented, young, energetic, experimenting and enterprising. I expect to see increasingly larger crowds attending their shows. (Only a handful of people made it out for the show, not terrible for a Monday. Perhaps the exhorbinant $7 cover had something to do with the small crowd.)

Only one out of the four members of the Portland band showed up. So,  Props to the lead singer (the one who showed up) for getting on stage and performing solo on electric guitar. I didn’t stay for Psychedelic Horseshit.
