Essentially a Confrontation

By Chris Kissel April 6, 2010

Today:

Laura Sweaney is a guru of gardening practices that many of us only know as sustainability buzzwords: ”permaculture,” “water catching,” “solar harvesting,” “natural pest management.”

Laura’s business, Terra Flora Farms, puts those buzzwords into action. She’s giving a free lecture entitled “Can you eat your lawn?”
at the YWCA tonight about easy, low-maintenance practices to turn your water-guzzling grass expanse into a permacultural paradise.

Today, 5:30pm, at the YWCA Opportunity Place (2024 3rd Avenue). Free; RSVP at [email protected].

Tomorrow:

The City Council's Public Safety and Education Committee is meeting tomorrow re: Council Member Tim Burgess' aggressive panhandling proposal, and this time the committee might actually vote on the proposal.

As PubliCola reported yesterday, Burgess amended the proposal yesterday to clear up a provision barring aggressively panhandling people who are using ATMs and Council Member Nick Licata introduced amendments that would delay the aggressive panhandling proposal until the council approves funding for other portions of Burgess' proposal.

Seattle City Council Member Tim Burgess

The last hearing on Burgess' was essentially a confrontation between advocates for the homeless and downtown neighborhood and businesses interests. This time, the public comment session is only 15 minutes.

Tomorrow at 9:30 am, at Seattle City Hall's Council Chambers (600 Fourth Avenue; Second Floor).

Tomorrow's Full Calendar:

The Columbia City Cinema
, a sweet indie movie theater and community gathering place in a historic building, is facing tough financial straits and folks are having a "movie night" tomorrow night to support the cinema, and then reconvening at Full Tilt ice cream, which also has beer and pinball. Wednesday at 7 pm at Columbia City Cinema (4816 Rainier Avenue). Tickets are $8.

"Polichix" is a meet-up of people who are politically interested/engaged and also happen to be ladies; the informal "chat" is taking place at Capitol Hill's Vermillion, a very cool art gallery/bar. Wednesday at 4 pm at Vermillion (1508 11th Avenue).

The Rainier Beach Community Center hosts its final cooking class for teens; teenagers pick out a recipe and then cook a meal with their friends. Wednesday from 4 to 6 pm, at Rainier Beach Community Center (8825 Rainier Avenue S).
