Council Proposes Cutting Judge Censured Last Year for Affair
As the P-I reported yesterday, the city council's budget committee voted yesterday to eliminate one municipal court judge, along with one department of the court, to help fill a midyear revenue shortfall of $15 million.
However, one aspect of the story that hasn't been reported is that the judge who's being cut—ahem, encouraged to retire—isn't the judge in charge of the department that's being eliminated, Jean Rietschel. Instead, the legislation eliminates the position held by Judge Ron Mamiya—the justice who, just last year, was censured for having an affair with a female court employee but allowed to keep his job. The woman subsequently sued the city for sexual harassment.
If the full council approves the legislation Monday, Mayima's position, Position 3, will be removed from the ballot in all future elections, leaving positions 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10.
