Police: Biking Burglar Hits Businesses in Greenlake and U-District

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee March 3, 2010

In Seattle, even the criminals are environmentally conscious. *sigh*

Police believe a burgling bicyclist hit at least two businesses in Greenlake and the University District last week.

Officers received their first call about the biking bandit at about 6:15 am on February 23rd from a restaurant in the 7200 block of E Greenlake Dr. According to a police report, surveillance footage showed a stocky white male wearing a bicycle helmet, gloves, and a backpack ransacking the restaurant, knocking over tills and damaging the business's front door.

Several hours later, police were called to the Big Time Brewery at 41st and University for another possible burglary by the biking bandit.

A second police report says a deliveryman found a man wearing a bike helmet wandering around behind the bar in the brewery about an hour after the Greenlake burglary. When the deliveryman asked the man what he was doing there, the report says the burglar—who was wearing his trademark bike helmet—claimed to be an employee. He then got on his bike and left.

The report says the business's till was damaged, but nothing was taken.

We'll see if we can track down any other reports for break-ins by this biking bandito.
