Man Shot In South Seattle Last Night Was Arrested In February for Machete Rampage
Update: The King County Medical Examiner has released the man's name, so we will too. The victim of the shooting has been identified as Andrew Ray Johnson.
According to police records, it appears the man fatally shot last night in the 4600 block of S Brandon St was Tasered and arrested by SPD officers in February after he went on a rampage with a machete in South Seattle.
According to a police report, officers were called to Rainier Ave S and S Byron street at about 11:30pm on February 12th after neighbors reported that a man was running around the neighborhood yelling and brandishing a machete, which he used to hack at several telephone poles and street signs.
Police found the 24-year-old machete-wielding suspect—who was accompanied by another man—in the area and tried to contact him, but police say the 24-year-old man ran from officers and tried to conceal the machete.
When police caught up with the man, they ordered him to drop his machete and get on the ground. However, the man did not comply and, police say, again tried to run from officers.
Officers eventually Tasered the man and arrested him. Initially, staff at the King County Jail refused to book the man, who was then taken to Harborview for medical treatment. It's unclear what the man was treated for.
A friend of the 24-year-old told later police he and his friend had been drinking earlier in the evening and that the 24-year-old man began “acting wild.”
Jail records indicate the 24-year-old man was booked shortly before 11pm on March 13th for property damage, carrying a concealed weapon, and unlawful use of a weapon for intimidation. It appears the man also had a warrant out for driving with a suspended license.
Court records indicate the man pleaded guilty to a weapons charge earlier this month in Seattle Municipal Court and was given a suspended sentence.
At 11:49pm last night, officers were called to the 4600 block of S Brandon St where they found the 24-year-old man, who had shot once in the chest and once in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say they don't yet have any suspects in the killing. A juvenile male who was picked up near the scene of the shooting was released and is not believed to have been involved in the incident.
Police have not officially confirmed the name of the man fatally shot in South Seattle last night, but a police source provided Seattlecrime.com with information about the man's identity.
