Man Arrested For Injuring Cyclist In Hit and Run Spree Under Investigation For CD Shooting

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee March 23, 2010

Seattle police are investigating a possible connection between a man arrested last year for a cross-town hit and run spree and an armed robbery in the Central District in which one man was wounded by gunfire.

According to a police search warrant affidavit released Monday, a 40-year-old man was walking near 12th Ave and E Jefferson St at about 11:30pm on November 30th when a group of three men—described as three black males in their late-teens to early-twenties, wearing black clothing—approached him and asked for a cigarette.

The 40-year-old man broke a cigarette in half and handed it to one of the men.

The group then surrounded the 40-year-old man, and one of the group members pulled out a handgun and told the man to hand over his cash. The 40-year-old man ran, then "heard one gunshot and felt pain in his forehead," the affidavit says.

Shortly after the shooting, police found Abdunasir Said, 21, coming out of the Blue Nile restaurant, just down the street from where the attempted robbery took place.

Police documents say a witness told officers Said "entered within a minute" of the shooting and "looked nervous and was looking out the windows." Police also noticed blood on Said's hooded shirt, which he claimed was from a fight earlier in the evening.

The robbery victim was able to identify Said as a member of the group that had attempted to rob him, but told officers Said was not the man who shot him. However, police found a Smith and Wesson .38 revolver in a dumpster behind the Blue Nile restaurant and asked Said whether his fingerprints were on the gun. "Said responded they 'might' be, but denied being the one who shot it," the affidavit says. Nevertheless, police released Said at the scene.

Police have filed a warrant to obtain a DNA sample from Said to match it up with the evidence on the revolver found at the scene.

Seattle police won't have to look hard to find Said to get their DNA sample. He has been held in the King County Jail since February 19th, when he was arrested for DWI, driving with a suspended license, and two counts of hit and run.

According to police records, Said's cross-town collision-fest began in the Central District at about 8:00pm on February 18th when he blew through a red light at Rainier Ave S and S Jackson, struck a cyclist, and drove off. The cyclist was transported to Harborview with non-life-threatening injuries.

About six hours later, police say Said crashed a Mercedes into a median in West Seattle, blowing out both front tires, and blocking several lanes of traffic near 24th Ave S and SW Holden St.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Said with a male companion, walking away from the scene of the accident. A police report notes Said "reeked of airbag propellant, intoxicants, and marijuana," and officers found an open bottle of Seagram's gin on him. Said was unable to speak in complete sentences, but managed to tell officers he had "purchased the [Mercedes] from a pair of 'crackheads' at 12th and Jefferson." The police report does not indicate whether the Mercedes was stolen.

When officers handcuffed Said, the report says he began rolling around on the ground, and told his passenger to "wait so they could leave together." According to police, "It was as if [Said] had not yet realized he was under arrest," which isn't surprising as police records indicate Said blew a .204 and .199 on a breathalyzer.

Court records say Said's first conviction came in 2003, after he was charged with auto theft when he was just 14 years old. Court documents say Said also has 28 arrests on his record, as well as 9 felony charges, including a 2006 robbery conviction.

It appears Said is currently being held on an immigration detainer.
