Extra Fizz: Seattle Wants McKenna to Withdraw from Lawsuit

By Erica C. Barnett March 24, 2010

The city council, with the support of City Attorney Pete Holmes, joined state Democrats in condemning Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna for joining a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of health-care reform.

The resolution (which has no binding legal power) "supports Washington Governor Christine Gregoire's position that [the health-care reform act] is in the interests of the State of Washington and is a constitutional exercise of Congress' powers, and opposes the position Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna has taken in a lawsuit challenging the [law], purportedly on behalf of the State of Washington."

At this afternoon's press availability, Mayor Mike McGinn said that with "a lot of people hurting right now in our city and state," McKenna was "not standing up for those who need health care benefits."
