Extra Fizz: Fire Alarm Forces Legislature to Abandon Budget Debate

By Camden Swita March 25, 2010

Calamity struck the Legislative Building in Olympia late this morning when someone pulled the fire alarm, forcing everyone outside. The culprit didn’t stay anonymous for long, however.

Gov. Chris Gregoire—who has threatened across-the-board budget cuts of 20 percent if the legislature doesn't come up with a balanced budget soon—was on her way off campus in her car when she stopped to speak with some staff who were standing outside, said David Ammons, communications director at Secretary of State Sam Reed’s office.

The staffers joked that the governor had been the one who pulled the alarm.

“I just want [legislators] to get out of here,” Gregoire responded.
