"Some people have decided that she is less worthy of police protection than other people"

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee February 19, 2010

The Seattle Times follows up yesterday's hit piece on the 15-year-old girl who was beaten in a Metro transit tunnel last month with an interview with her attorney, who explains why her criminal past has no bearing on her possible suit against the city/county:

Attorney James Bible says he's well aware that Aiesha Steward-Baker has a past that's less than exemplary.

He knows about the 15-year-old's arrests for alleged assaults in Snohomish and King counties, and that she's under investigation for allegedly stealing a backpack from an Ingraham High School classmate.

But he says that doesn't mean she's a "thug," or someone who was undeserving of police protection when she was assaulted in Seattle's downtown transit tunnel.

"Some people have decided that she is less worthy of police protection than other people," Bible said. "But she is not less worthy. She has value and we believe that anybody who reaches out to law enforcement in their moment of need is worthy and should receive help."
