Police Surround Lake City Apartment Building
Police officers have surrounded an apartment building near 123rd and Lake City looking for an assault suspect.
The victim of the assault apparently told police the suspect is inside his apartment with a rifle handgun, marijuana, and cocaine.
Police negotiators are on the way to try to get the man to come outside. The man may have hostages in the apartment.
Update: a woman has come out of the apartment and told police no one else is inside. Police still believe there is a man in the unit.
Update @ 11:30pm: SWAT is on scene and police have requested a mobile command unit
Update @ 12:30 am: Not much happened in the last hour. Police were talking to a man who appeared to have blood on his face. They eventually patted him down and put him in the back of a squad car.
Another officer sat his car with a young girl in a red sweatshirt. Police believe there still may be two children in the home.
Police at the scene wouldn't talk about the incident and eventually pulled most of their units back to a parking lot several blocks away from the apartment building, where they ate burgers from Dick's.
At lieutenant at the scene said it was likely to be a long night, so we'll update in the morning.
Update at 12:58: OK, so I lied. SWAT has called for their armored Bearcat unit. Also, SPD has released some info about the incident:
On February 22nd at approximately 10:10 p.m. officers responded to the report of an assault at an apartment complex in the 12000 block of 31st Avenue NE. Officers arrived on scene and made contact with the adult male victim, who was assaulted by an adult male suspect inside an apartment. The victim was treated at the scene by SFD medics and did not require transport.
The suspect is believed to be inside the apartment in question and has refused to come out. Officers and SWAT team members have the apartment completely surrounded and are attempting to negotiate with the suspect to obtain a peaceful resolution.
Update 1:31 am: Lake City neighbors: get ready for some loud.
Update: 1:32 am: I live several miles from the scene and I can still hear the flashbangs.
Update: 2:30 am: Police managed to get the three children out of the home. They still haven't been able to coax their 26-year-old suspect out.
Final Update (?): SPD says their suspect managed to slip away:
On February 22nd at approximately 10:10 p.m. officers responded to the report of an assault at an apartment complex in the 12000 block of 31st Avenue NE. Officers arrived on scene and made contact with the adult male victim, who was physically assaulted by an adult male suspect inside an apartment (the suspect and victim are known to each other). The victim was treated at the scene by SFD medics for facial injuries and did not require transport.
The victim also reported that the suspect threatened him with a gun. Responding officers attempted to contact the suspect, who was believed to be still inside the apartment in question, but he refused to come outside. Officers and SWAT team members surrounded the apartment and negotiators made repeated attempts to establish contact with the suspect to no avail.
The SWAT team made a limited entry and rescued three children from the apartment: two seven-year-olds (one female and one male), and a two-year-old boy. The children were not injured and are not related to either the suspect or the victim. The mother of two of the children lives in the apartment; the third child she was babysitting. She (the mother) came outside to speak with officers near the beginning of the incident and did not go back inside. The mother of the third child showed up at the scene after the arrival of officers. Once outside, all three children were reunited with their mothers.
Negotiators continued their attempts to establish contact with the suspect. These repeated attempts were unsuccessful. The SWAT team introduced irritants into the garage area of the apartment. Shortly thereafter, an adult male subject exited the garage. He was interviewed and released at the scene.
After continued attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful, the SWAT team entered and searched the apartment and determined that the suspect was not there. All indications are that the suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of the initial responding officers. The suspect, an adult male in his 30’s, remains at large. The identity of the suspect is known and officers are currently looking for him.
The mother and the two children that reside in the apartment have returned inside safe and sound. The (second) mother who arrived at the scene later has returned home with her child safe and sound.
This remains an active and on-going investigation.
