Police Investigating Arson Fire In North Seattle

Police officers at the scene of an early-morning car fire in Jackson Park neighborhood told Seattlecrime.com that the blaze was the work of an arsonist.

Shortly after 1:00 a.m., fire units were called out to the fire at 15th Av Ne and Ne 135th St, on a dark street next to the Jackson Park golf course.

The fire was out by the time I arrived at the scene, but a burned out Volkswagen Jetta was still smoldering near the southern edge of the park.

SPD's arson bomb squad was initially called to the fire, but officers at the scene said they had declined to come out.

Earlier this month, police investigated a series of arson fires in the nearby Pinehurst neighborhood. At least two homes were set ablaze, causing about $10,000 in damage. Police arrested one man—who has a history of arson—near the scene of one of the fires, but he was released a day later.

We'll check in with SFD and SPD later today and find out more.

Update: SPD spokeswoman Dana Vander Houwen just sent us an email with a few more details about the fire:

Fire Investigators determined that the car fire that occured this morning at 15 Ave NE and NE 135th Street was intentionally set. Damage was estimated at $4,200. At this time, there is no reason to believe there is any connection between this and a structure fire that occurred in that area earlier this month.
