The Morning Blotter

Gas Thieves Strike in Ballard: A report just released by SPD says thieves made off with 70 gallons of gas from a Ballard gas station earlier this month. The report says two men pulled up to a 76 station on NW 58th St and 15th Ave NW on January 17th, used a credit card to start a gas pump, removed the pump cover with a screwdriver, and broke off a pin which meters the flow of gasoline. The tampering went unnoticed by an "elderly" clerk, and the men were able to make off with 70 gallons of gas. A gas station staff member told police the men may have returned the next day in a different vehicle, but drove off when contacted by an employee. Police were able to get the license plate off of one of the vehicles, which is registered to an address in Kent.
