Shooting In South Seattle, Officer Assaulted Near Seattle Center, and a Robbery

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee January 1, 2010

Rainier Valley: A man was shot in the leg during a melee outside of a South Seattle home this morning, police say. At 3:15 a.m., officers were dispatched to a home at 36th and S Adams after a man called police and said he'd shot someone. When officers arrived, they found the victim, who'd been shot once in the leg, shattering his femur. Officers interviewed the victim, the shooter, and witnesses, who all gave very different stories. The suspect told police he shot the other man in self-defense. The victim’s brother told police the gunman had gotten into a fight with a woman, and the victim had been trying to break it up when he was shot. Police say the victim was taken to Harborview in stable condition. The gunman was booked into the King County Jail for assault.

Seattle Center: An officer working traffic control at 4th Ave N and Mercer St at about 12:30 a.m. was assaulted after he tried to stop two men from beating up a Metro driver. When the officer intervened, the men knocked the officer to the ground and fled. The officer was taken to Harborview for injuries to his shoulder and knee. Police arrested the suspects—who police say were "a father and son team"—and booked them into the King County Jail for assault.

Pioneer Square: A female purse snatcher accosted a woman in Pioneer Square at about 1:15 this morning near 3rd and Spring. According to police:

This appears to be nothing more than a situation in which the suspect took advantage of an opportunity to victimize a citizen who was out trying to enjoy the celebration.
